How to Fix Your Whirlpool Oven When the Convection Function is no Longer Working

The convection function in your Whirlpool double oven gas range model WGG745S0FE  blows hot air on and around your food to cook it faster and more evenly. If you enabled the convection function and it didn’t work, a faulty fan motor or element could be behind the malfunction. To help you replace the defective component, we’ve created a step-by-step repair guide below.

Unplug your range and turn off its gas supply before you begin replacing the fan motor or the element. During the repair process, you’ll encounter a number of sharp objects, meaning protecting your hands and eyes by wearing work gloves and safety goggles is highly recommended.

The Convection Fan Motor

The fan, which blows hot air on and around your food is run by a motor. If the motor is damaged and it no longer starts, the fan won’t rotate. In order to get the fan functioning again, you’ll need to replace the fan motor.

How to Replace the Convection Fan Motor in Your Whirlpool Range

1. Slide your range forward to gain access to the appliance’s rear panel. Your stove is heavy, so you may need to enlist the help of a friend or family member to safely move the appliance. Once you’ve created enough room, head to the back of your range, and unthread the screws holding the lower, rear panel to the stove. After you’ve taken out all the screws, lift the panel up and off your appliance.
2. At this point, you’ll need to take the lower oven door off your range. With help, tilt your range backwards and place a piece of wood underneath it to keep the front slightly elevated. Then, unthread the screws securing the lower door retaining brackets to the appliance’s frame. Once you’ve removed both screws, stand-up and open the lower oven door and take out the second set of screws holding the retaining brackets to the frame. Next, disengage the door hinge locks and lift the door up and off your range.
3. Carefully, tilt your appliance back and slide forward the piece of wood holding the range up. After your appliance is once again sitting on all four legs, take out the oven racks. Then, reach into the lower oven cavity and remove the screws securing the convection fan baffle to the rear oven wall.
4. Using a wrench, unthread the nut holding the fan blade to the motor shaft. Once you’ve removed the nut, pull the fan blade off the shaft. Then, take out the screws securing the convection fan motor to the back of the range.
5. Head to the backside of your appliance, and disconnect the fan motor wire harness. Then, pull the faulty motor off your range.
6. Before you can install the new fan motor to your range, you need to take the insulation and the fan plate off the old motor and attach it to the new one. To do so, simply slide the insulation off the motor shaft, and then unthread the screws securing the plate to the damaged motor. Next, place the plate on the new motor and secure it with the screws you took off the old motor. Once the plate is attached, slide the insulation onto the motor shaft.
7. Now it’s time to install the new convection fan motor to your appliance. Start by connecting the fan motor wire harness. Then, insert the motor shaft into the small opening on the back of your range. At this point, you’ll need somebody to hold the motor in place while you head to the front of your range to secure the part with the screws you removed earlier. Once the screws are in place and the motor is attached, slide the fan blade back on the motor shaft and rethread the fan nut to hold the fan blade in place.
8. Reinstall the fan baffle, and slide the oven racks back into the oven cavity. Then, tilt the range back a few inches and slide a piece of wood underneath the front of the appliance. Grab the lower oven door and insert the hinges into the hinge openings in the door frame. Push the hinges forward to lock them into place. Next, reattach the upper retaining brackets to the door frame, and then secure the lower retaining brackets. Close the oven door.
9. Tilt your appliance back, and remove the piece of wood holding it up. Finally, move to the back of your range, and replace the lower, rear panel.
10. To finish up your repair, plug-in your range and turn on its gas supply valve.

The Convection Element

If the convection element is burnt out and is no longer producing heat, the convection function won’t work. Replacing the part is a simple repair that should take you no more than an hour.

How to Replace the Convection Element in Your Whirlpool Range

1. To take the lower oven door off your range, follow steps two through three in the repair guide provided above.
2. Once the bottom oven door is detached, and you’ve taken out the oven racks, unthread the screws holding the fan baffle onto the oven’s rear wall. Then, pull the baffle out of the oven cavity.
3. With the baffle out of the way, you can now remove the faulty convection element. To do so, simply unthread the two mounting screws securing it to the oven’s back wall. Then, take the element off the wall, and disconnect the wires running to the element terminals. At this point, make sure the element wires don’t fall into the openings in the oven wall; otherwise you’ll need to remove the back panel to fish them out.
4. Retrieve your new convection element, and attach the element wires in the back of the oven to the element terminals. Then, secure the element to the wall with the mounting screws you took out earlier.
5. Replace the convection fan baffle and put the oven racks back in the oven cavity. Then, tilt the range back and slide a piece of wood underneath the front of the appliance. Align the hinges on the bottom oven door with the hinge openings on the door frame. Once the hinges are in place, push them down to lock them. Next, reattach the top and bottom retaining brackets to fully secure the oven door to the range.
6. Shut the oven door and remove the wood piece holding the range up. Then, plug-in your appliance and turn the gas supply back on to complete your repair.
