Error codes on your Bosch washing machine indicate potential problems with your appliance that needs your attention to fix. By noting down the specific code and checking the corresponding parts of your washer, you’ll have a better chance at correctly identifying and fixing the issue before it becomes a costly problem.

Is your Bosch washer displaying an E18 error code? Here’s what you need to know about this code and how to fix it quickly.

What Does The E18 Error Code on Your Bosch Washer Mean?

Bosch washing machines are generally considered to be highly reliable and durable. However, like all appliances, problems can arise. To help with diagnosis, error codes will be displayed on the main front control panel.

The E18 error code appears when there is a drainage problem with your Bosch washing machine. Common causes of this issue include a blocked drain pump, a dirty washer filter, or a clogged drain hose.

You may also notice:

  • Water pooling in the tank
  • Standing water in the drum after a spin cycle
  • Wet clothes after a spin cycle
  • Strange noises like humming or grinding, especially during draining
  • The drain hose is visibly twisted or kinked

How To Fix The E18 Error Code: A Step By Step Guide

If your Bosch washing machine is showing the E18 error code, follow this troubleshooting guide to identify and fix the drainage problem effectively.

1. Drain The Water

To help you access the main components of your Bosch water, you first need to drain the water. Close the main water supply so no more water can flow in, turn off the washing machine from the power source, and open the service flap, located at the bottom front corner of your Bosch washer.

Once the flap is opened, take the drain hose out of the holder and remove the sealing cap. Drain the water into a flat container. The water may be hot so allow it to cool down fully if you’re unsure. Use towels to mop up any spillage that may occur.

2. Check The Drain Filter

Your Bosch washer filter is a critical component as it helps protect the drain pump from hair, clothing lint, or foreign objects that can block it. If you never check or clean the drain filter, you may notice foul odors, poor drainage, and the E18 error code.

Ideally, this filter should be checked and cleaned every 1-2 months, but more often if you use your washer regularly. To clean it, locate the main access panel on your Bosch washer, unscrew the filter carefully, and scrub with a soft bristly brush and warm water.

3. Check The Drain Hose For Blockage or Kinks

An E18 error code can also be caused by a kinked or blocked drain hose. This is typically located at the back of your Bosch washer, near the top corner and running down to a standpipe or sink. Check the hose for any visible kinks that may be impeding water flow. In this case, simply straightening and positioning the hose properly could improve flow.

You can check for blockage and clean debris by using a plumber’s snake, a long wire from a bent coat hanger, or by doing a hot water flush.

4. Check The Drain Pump

The drain pump could be blocked or faulty from debris or from motor failure. In your Bosch washer, this is typically located behind the service panel on the lower front of the appliance. Clean the pump and check for visible debris and ensure the impeller is not damaged and can rotate freely.

If you suspect wiring issues, you may need to get assistance from a professional repair technician as this will require careful disassembling and reassembling.

Bosch Washer Still Displaying E18 Error Code? Tips and Tricks

Reset The Washing Machine

In some cases, a simple reset can clear the E18 error code from the display panel and restore normal functionality. Turn off the washer with the power button, unplug the appliance from the power source, and wait 5 minutes. Then plug the washer back in and see if the error code has cleared.

Replace The Drain Pump

In some cases, the drain pump will need to be replaced especially if there are visible signs of wear or damage. Typically, a washer drain pump will need to be replaced every 5-10 years. Observe strange sounds like buzzing or grinding, damaged components, or an impeller that doesn’t rotate well. Either you or a washer repair technician can test the pump for continuity to confirm whether it needs to be replaced or not.

Other Common Bosch Washer Error Codes

Your Bosch washer will also display other error codes, especially relating to door locks, water supply issues, or heating issues.

  • F18: Like E18, this also related to drainage issues
  • E16 or F16: The door is open
  • E19 or F19: The recommended heating time has been exceeded
  • E20 or F20: There is unexpected heating in your washer
  • E15 or F25: There is a turbidity sensor issue
  • E16 or F26: There is an analogue pressure sensor issue

Final Thoughts

The E18 error code is a common error code that can be displayed on your Bosch washer. It indicates an issue with drainage that can be addressed by checking multiple components of your washer, including the drain filter, drain hose, and drain pump. Manual water draining can be done in emergencies, but if the error code keeps flashing and the problem persists, you may need to get repairs done by a professional.
