Refrigerator Repair

An ice maker that quits is one of the more common refrigerator calls we get across Los Angeles and Orange County, and the good news is that several of the causes are things you can rule out at home before booking a visit. Whirlpool ice makers almost always trace back to a short list of parts: the water supply, the filter, the freezer temperature, and the ice maker control itself.

Begin with the water. A restricted or shut-off supply is the single most frequent reason an ice maker stops, so make sure the saddle valve or shutoff behind the fridge is fully open and the line has no kinks. A refrigerator pushed too tightly against the wall can pinch its own water line, which slowly starves the ice maker. Leaving a small service loop of tubing behind the unit prevents that.

Next, the water filter. Whirlpool recommends changing the filter about every six months. A clogged filter cuts water flow enough to slow or stop ice production, and it often shows up alongside odd tasting water or slow dispensing. If you cannot remember the last change, that is a cheap and easy first move.

Then check the freezer temperature. Ice production needs the freezer in the range of 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. If the freezer is running warm, the ice maker may sit idle even though everything else looks normal. Give the freezer a few hours to recover after adjusting.

Confirm the ice maker is actually turned on. It sounds obvious, but the control arm or on/off setting gets bumped off more often than people expect, especially when someone reaches into the bin. If your model has a feeler arm, make sure it is down in the on position.

If all of that checks out, a reset is the next step. Unplug the refrigerator for one minute, then restore power, wait a couple of hours, and check for ice. On models with a reset button on the ice maker, press and hold it briefly instead. A reset clears minor control glitches and is the same first step the manufacturer recommends.

When ice still will not come, the likely culprits move into technician territory: a failed water inlet valve, a jammed or frozen ice maker assembly, or frost on the evaporator coils from a defrost issue. Newer Whirlpool French door models that place the ice maker in the door can also develop sealing or defrost related problems that need parts and diagnosis rather than a reset. Those are the cases where guessing gets expensive.
