Troubleshooting Guide: KitchenAid KDTM404KPS Dishwasher Cleaning Issues

The KitchenAid KDTM404KPS 360° Max Jets™ Third Rack Dishwasher is built for high performance, but like any appliance, cleaning issues can arise. Here’s a clear, structured guide to fix the most common cleaning complaints:

1. Check and Clean the Filter Assembly

  • Location: Bottom of the tub, under the lower spray arm.
  • Steps:
    1. Remove the bottom rack.
    2. Twist and lift out the cylindrical filter.
    3. Rinse under warm water and use a soft brush to remove food debris.
    4. Reinstall securely.

2. Inspect and Clean the Spray Arms

  • Problem: Spray arms clogged with food particles or hard water deposits.
  • Steps:
    1. Remove the lower and upper spray arms by gently lifting or unscrewing.
    2. Rinse under running water.
    3. Use a toothpick or wire to clear blocked holes.
    4. Reattach securely.

3. Ensure Proper Loading

  • Problem: Overloading or incorrect placement of dishes.
  • Tip: Avoid blocking the spray arms and jets. Do not stack dishes or bowls too tightly.

4. Use the Correct Detergent

  • Problem: Poor detergent quality or too much/too little detergent.
  • Solution: Use a high-quality detergent specifically designed for automatic dishwashers. Consider using Finish Quantum or Cascade Platinum.

5. Verify Water Temperature

  • Optimal Temperature: 120°F (49°C)
  • Run hot water in the sink before starting the dishwasher to ensure hot water reaches the appliance immediately.

6. Check Water Inlet Valve

If the dishwasher isn’t filling properly:

  • Inspect the Water Inlet Valve (Part Number W11175771) for signs of clogging or failure.
  • Replace if needed.

7. Run Diagnostic Mode

You can enter diagnostic mode to check for stored error codes:

  1. Press the following button sequence quickly: Heated Dry → Normal → Heated Dry → Normal.
  2. The dishwasher will run a self-test cycle and display error codes if present.

8. Clean the Interior with Affresh®

Over time, grease and mineral buildup can affect performance.

  • Run an empty cycle with Affresh® Dishwasher Cleaner monthly.
