Maytag dishwashers are famous for their Dual Power Filtration and heavy-duty motors. You bought one because you wanted a machine that could chew through dirty dishes without pre-rinsing. But when that powerful machine starts sounding like a blender full of gravel, it’s alarming.

At Paradise Appliance Service, we are the exclusive Whirlpool Factory Certified Care provider for Los Angeles and Orange County. We service thousands of Maytag units every year, and we know exactly how they are engineered.

If your dishwasher is making a racket, don’t panic. Often, the noise is actually proof that the machine is trying to do its job—but it needs a little help. Here are the top three reasons your Maytag is acting up.

1. The Grinding Sound: The Chopper Blade Assembly

Unlike many other brands that rely solely on mesh filters, many Maytag units feature a 4-blade stainless steel food chopper. This built-in disposal grinds up food particles so they can pass through the drain.

  • The Issue: Sometimes, a hard object (like a fruit pit, a piece of broken glass, or a popcorn kernel) gets stuck in the chopper blade area. The grinding noise you hear is the steel blade hitting that object at high speed.
  • The Fix: This often requires accessing the pump assembly at the bottom of the tub. While you can sometimes clear it yourself by removing the filter screen, if the blade itself is damaged or the screen is torn, the assembly needs to be replaced to prevent debris from clogging the wash arms.

2. The Buzzing Sound: The Drain Pump

If the noise happens specifically at the beginning or end of the cycle (when water is moving out), the culprit is likely the drain pump.

  • The Cause: Over time, small debris like toothpicks or broken glass shards can slip past the filters and settle in the drain pump housing. The impeller (a small plastic fan inside the pump) hits this debris as it spins, creating a loud buzzing or rattling vibration.
  • The Risk: If ignored, the debris can shear off the impeller blades, leading to a Does Not Drain failure.

3. The Rhythmic Thumping: Spray Arm Obstruction

This is the simplest fix, but also the most common. If you hear a repetitive thump-thump-thump every few seconds, it is rarely a mechanical failure.

  • The Check: Open the door and spin the spray arms by hand.
  • The Culprit: Usually, a tall baking sheet or a ladle handle has slipped through the rack and is blocking the spray arm’s path. Repacking the machine often solves this instantly.

4. The High-Pitched Squeal: Circulation Motor Bearings

This is a sign of age. If the machine makes a continuous, high-pitched whining or screaming sound throughout the entire wash cycle, the bearings inside the main circulation motor may be failing.

  • The Solution: This is a major repair. Because the motor is the heart of the dishwasher, this typically requires a professional replacement of the motor assembly.
